Clinicians frequently evaluate patients with pulmonary disease before surgery who are at increased risk for pulmonary and nonpulmonary perioperative complications. From the available literature, high–risk patients and those patients for whom a multidisciplinary collaboration will be most helpful can be accurately identified.
