Tasdogan M et al. – The objective is to compare the effects of an intravenous infusion of propofol and the alpha–2 adrenoceptor, dexmedetomidine, on inflammatory responses and intraabdominal pressure (IAP) in severe sepsis after abdominal surgery, specifically, serum cytokine levels (interleukin [IL]–1, IL–6, and tumor necrosis factor [TNF]–?) and IAP. Dexmedetomidine infusion decreases TNF–a, IL–1, and IL–6 levels and IAP more than a propofol infusion.
