Double Lumen Tube for Lung Isolation in a patient with Life Threatening Hemoptysis
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology, 10/19/09
Alex S et al. – There are numerous causes of massive hemoptysis including infections, neoplasms, cardiovascular disorders, and trauma. Hemoptysis that jeopardizes respiratory function should be treated as a medical emergency. In a patient with hemoptysis, priorities are to maintain airway, optimise oxygenation and stabilise the hemodynamic status. Intubation with a single lumen endotracheal tube is recommended until the bleeding is localised. Once airway and respiration is controlled, measures can be taken to identify the source of bleeding and prompt treatment options include surgery, endovascular stents, embolisation etc.
