El Beheiry H et al. – Fibreoptic bronchoscopy confirmed that GEB is superior to the IT technique in ensuring precise alignment of the tip of the drain tube of the PLMA with the upper esophageal opening. Accurate positioning may better preserve gastroesophageal drainage function of the PLMA.

This study will have an impact on how we can optimize the use of the proseal PLMA to its full potential, i.e. preserving its gastric drainage function. We advocate the use of the gum elastic bougie to insert the proseal PLMA particularly in patients in whom we need the patency of the drainage tube to prevent possible aspiration and in patients were gastric drainage is needed. An important secondary conclusion of this study is that adequate ventilation of patients through the proseal PLMA does not mean that the tip of the PLMA drain tube is correctly aligned with the upper esophageal opening. Thus, gastric insufflations and aspiration may still be possible simultaneously with adequate ventilation.
