In our prospective study we were able to demonstrate that hypoxic hepatitis, also known as ischemic hepatitis or shock liver is a frequent finding at the intensive care unit with a prevalence of 10 percent. Outcome is dependent of duration and severity of liver injury and underlying diseases.This epidemiologic study should encourage future research to evaluate therapeutic options to improve outcome in this live threatening disease.
