While several smaller trials had suggested some benefit to performing Carotid endarterectomy under regional anesthesia, the recent large-scale randomized, prospective trial of general anesthesia versus local anesthesia (GALA) failed to find significant advantages of one of the two standard anesthesia techniques over the other. The technique descibed in this paper potentially offers the benefits of both general and regional anesthesia without the risks associated with urgent conversion to general anesthesia and represents a third anesthetic option available for this type of surgery.
