Single-point acupuncture and physiotherapy for the treatment of painful shoulder: A multicentre randomized controlled trial
Rheumatology, 06/17/08
Vas J et al. - Single-point acupuncture in association with physiotherapy improves shoulder function and alleviates pain, compared with physiotherapy as the sole treatment, and also reduces the consumption of analgesic medicaments.
Methods- Study to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture associated with physiotherapy for pts with painful shoulder
- Study participants were recruited with a clinical diagnosis of unilateral subacromial syndrome
- All participants (n=425) received 15 sessions of physiotherapy during the 3 wks of treatment
- They were then randomized to additionally receive acupuncture or mock TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) once a wk
- The primary outcome measure: change in the Constant–Murley Score (CMS) at 4 wks after randomization
- The mean score (S.D.) on the CMS had increased by 16.6 (15.6) points among the acupuncture group vs 10.6 (13.5) points in the control group
- Mean difference between the two groups was statistically significant
- By the end of the treatment, 53% of the pts in the acupuncture group had decreased their consumption of analgesics vs 30% in control group
