Herbstreit F et al. - Minimal neuromuscular blockade markedly increases upper airway closing pressure, partly by impairing the genioglossus muscle compensatory response. Increased airway collapsibility despite unaffected values for resting ventilation may predispose patients to postoperative respiratory complications, particularly during airway challenges.
