Huang YM et al. – The distribution of VDR genotypes was comparable between patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). VDR gene polymorphisms are associated with distinct clinical phenotypes in Taiwanese HBV carriers but not with HCC development.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Dr. Y-W Huang, Professor J-H Kao, 08/23/09

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the association of VDR gene polymorphisms with distinct clinical phenotypes of a prospective cohort of HBV carriers and with the development of HCC. Since age and sex are two important determinants of clinical phenotypes and outcomes of chronic HBV infection, all of the analyses in this study were adjusted for age and sex to evaluate the independent risk of specific VDR genotype and haplotype. The results of this study thus convincingly demonstrated the association of VDR genotype and haplotype polymorphisms with hepatitis flares and HBeAg positivity in Taiwanese HBV carriers, but not with hepatocellular carcinoma development. (P.S. The first author name should be Huang Yi-Wen (Huang YW), but not Huang YM)
