Manno C et al. – The combination of corticosteroids and ramipril may provide additional benefits compared with ramipril alone in preventing the progression of renal disease in proteinuric IgAN patients in the long–term follow–up.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Francesco Paolo Schena, 07/31/09

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) Nephropathy is very common biopsy-proven glomerulonephritis in the world and it is the most common cause of chronic renal failure. Therefore the best treatment for this disease remains to be defined. Schena's group of the University of Bari demonstrated in a randomized controlled clinical trial that the combination of prednisone plus ramipril was able to reduce significantly the risk of renal disease progression after a long-term follow-up of eight years. This is the first report that shows a long-term benefit of therapy in patients with IgA Nephropathy. Therefore these patients have now a long-term therapy for reducing the probability of end-stage kidney failure.
