Bulla R et al. – The authors show that trophoblast cells produce complement components, and that synthesis of these proteins may be regulated by the pro–inflammatory cytokine IFN gammma. Complement synthesis by trophoblast cells potentially contributes to placental immune defence from pathogen infection.
