Lidar M et al. – A review on the role of infectious agents in the pathogenesis of the primary vasculitides. Points of discussion are:

A multitude of infectious agents have been implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic vasculitis. Some of them are:
- Viruses: HBV, HCV, HIV, Parvovirus B19, Cytomegalovirus, Varicella zoster virus
- Bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Rickettsiaceae, Borrelia burgdorferi
- Parasites: Treponema pallidum
Innumerable additional agents, be it a virus, bacteria or parasite, can stimulate auto-immune responses by various mechanisms
Can also trigger immune-complex mediated damage or directly invade vessel walls leading to a systemic vasculitic process
Prompt anti-microbial therapy frequently curtails the vascular inflammation and may be the only therapy needed for resolution of the vasculitis
In more severe cases, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory agents are given in conjunction
