300 mg doses of aliskiren and 160 mg and 320 mg doses of valsartan alone and in combination. The doses were increased to 300 mg of aliskiren and 320 mg of valsartan at four weeks. They reported that the combination aliskiren and valsartan reduced BP to a greater extent than the monotherapies alone ... diastolic BP from baseline were 17.2/12.2 mm Hg for the combination of aliskiren 300 mg and valsartan 320 mg, compared with 12.8/9.7 mm Hg for valsartan 320 mg alone, 13.0/9.0 mm Hg for aliskiren 300 mg alone and 4.6/4.1 mm Hg for placebo.

Core Evidence, 08/14/2009
|
Krzesinski J–M et al. – The amlodipine/valsartan combination is an association of two well–known antihypertensive products with specific targets in cardiovascular protection, namely ... amlodipine/valsartan combination is better than other antihypertensive strategies for cardiovascular or renal protection, but some trials with other combination therapies show such potential advantage.

Randomized study to compare valsartan ± HCTZ versus amlodipine ± HCTZ strategies to maximize blood pressure control
Vascular Health and Risk Management, 10/23/2009
|
Zappe D et al. – At study end, 78.8% of patients on valsartan ± HCTZ were controlled (BP < 140/90 mmHg) and still on study medication versus 67.8% on amlodipine ± HCTZ ... had a higher incidence of peripheral edema (22.4% vs 2.2%) and associated discontinuations (7.3% vs <1%). Initiating therapy earlier with valsartan/HCTZ, rather than titrating monotherapy to its maximum dose before adding a second agent, was superior to amlodipine monotherapy or amlodipine ± HCTZ

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the effects of valsartan on exercise time in patients with symptomatic heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
European Journal of Heart Failure, 10/06/2009
|
Parthasarathy1 HK et al. – In this population, which predominantly included patients with well–controlled hypertension and symptomatic HFPEF, addition of valsartan did not increase ... exercise time within 14 weeks. However, valsartan 320 mg reduced blood pressure and improved symptoms of perceived exertion (Borg score) during exercise and was generally well–tolerated.
