Scheduled medications and falls in dementia patients utilizing a wander garden
American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias, 04/17/09
Detweiler MB et al. – Findings for frequent users of a dementia wander garden who were monitored for psychiatric medications and changes in fall number and severity show positive benefits for the use of the garden.
Methods- Classification 28 dementia unit residents into high (HUG) and low (LUG) wander garden user groups
- Assessment of number and severity of falls
- Monitoring of type and dose of scheduled psychiatric medications for 12 mo before and 12 mo after wander garden opened
- Residents experienced ~30% decrease for raw number of falls and fall severity scores
- Significant reduction in high-dose antipsychotics for HUG group vs relatively no change in antidepressant, hypnotic, and anxiolytic use
- Fewer scheduled medications, reduced falls, and lower fall morbidity for HUG vs LUG group
- Most significant changes in scheduled psychiatric medications: reductions in scheduled antipsychotics and an increase in residents requiring no antipsychotics
