Is a postintubation chest radiograph necessary in the emergency department
International Journal of Emergency Medicine, 11/25/09
McGillicuddy DC et al. – ED intubations were judged to have “satisfactory” placement by CXR in 81% of patients. CXR is able to identify a small subset of patients that likely need immediate intervention based on their CXR. Until further studies refute the utility of postintubation CXR in ED intubations, they should remain a part of routine practice.
Leon D. Sanchez, 11/26/09
| This was a small, retrospective study that sought to answer the question of whether a post intubation radiograph added any benefit after other confirmatory procedures such as visualization of the cords during the intubation, auscultation of lung fields and use of colorimetric CO2 detectors. While settings such as the operating room do not routinely utilize a post intubation CXR we concluded that this is of value in the emergency department setting. |
