This is not surprising given the aging demographics as well as aggressive medical and surgical management of seriously ill patients . Moreover, recent data suggests that acute renal failure can be an independent risk factor for mortality in critical ill patients . This finding is strengthened by the experimental evidence that acute renal injury contributes to injury to distant organs
