Nordstrom, D.C., et al. - Fewer than 40% of newly diagnosed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) reach remission with a combination of traditional DMARDs, and therefore new effective therapies are still needed. Proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha and IL-1, are important pathogenetic mediators in RA and related conditions. Targeted therapies against these cytokines and downstream inflammatory mediators have greatly added to the therapeutic arsenal and brought new hope to patients in providing physicians with new effective treatment options
