Clinicopathologic and prognostic factors of young and elderly patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma: Is there really a difference
Diseases of the Esophagus, 05/05/08
Vallbohmer D et al. - Total number of patients with adenocarcinoma of the esophagus increased dramatically, but the number of young patients remained rather constant in the european population included in this study, mainly due to less comorbidity and more frequent use of neoadjuvant therapy.
Methods- Aim was to compare clinicopathologic and prognostic factors of young and elderly pts with esophageal adenocarcinoma
- 223 pts were analyzed and divided in 3 groups: (i) pts <=50 yrs (n=40); (ii) pts between 50-70 yrs (n=131); and (iii) pts >70 yrs (n=52)
- Clinicopathological and prognostic factors were compared between these groups
- Total no. of pts with esophageal adenocarcinoma increased significantly
- Although the total no. of pts <=50 yrs increased over the yrs, the proportion of young pts remained constant
- The no. of pts with a pT1-tumor was similar among all groups
- Young pts had a lower comorbidity and received more often a neoadjuvant radio-chemotherapy
- The 5-yr survival rate of young pts was significantly higher vs elderly pts
