Chemoembolization combined with radiofrequency ablation for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma larger than 3 cm
JAMA, 04/09/08
Cheng BQ et al. - Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is superior to TACE alone or RFA alone in improving survival for pts with hepatocellular carcinoma >3 cm
Methods- Study to compare survival rates of pts with large hepatocellular carcinoma tumors who received treatment with TACE combined with RFA therapy (TACE-RFA), TACE alone, and RFA alone
- Pts randomized to treatment with combined TACE-RFA (96 pts), TACE alone (95), or RFA alone (100)
- Primary end point: survival; secondary end point: objective response rate
- During median 28.5-mo follow-up, median survival times: TACE grp (3.4 courses), 24 mo; RFA grp (3.6), 22 mo; TACE-RFA grp (4.4), 37 mo
- Better overall survival with TACE-RFA vs TACE alone or RFA alone
- Better survival with TACE-RFA vs RFA for pts with uninodular hepatocellular carcinoma and with TACE-RFA vs TACE for pts with multinodular hepatocellular carcinoma
- Rate of objective response sustained >=6 mo was higher with TACE-RFA (54%) than with either TACE (35%) or RFA (36%) alone
