Chew KK et al. – The findings show that ED is not only significantly associated with but is also strongly predictive of subsequent atherosclerotic CV events. This is even more striking when ED presents at a younger age.

Kew-Kim Chew, 11/22/09

The linked-data study was based on atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) events that had occurred as hospital admissions and death registrations subsequent to the manifestation of erectile dysfunction (ED) in a cohort of men who had no known records of CV disease prior to ED. The epidemiological information from the study confirms the role of ED as a predictor for future atherosclerotic CV events and supports the notion that ED and atherosclerotic CV disease are presentations in different vascular beds of generalised vascular endothelial disease. The raison d’être is compelling for a paradigm shift in the perception and management of ED. Men with ED should be rigorously investigated for CV risk factors and disease, which may be silent or asymptomatic, so that CV risk prevention and minimisation may be initiated early.
