Marzocchi A et al. – Findings failed to show equivalence of high-dose bolus (HDB) tirofiban and abciximab as adjunctive therapy to primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI)
Methods- Prospective, multicenter, open-label trial (Facilitated Angioplasty with Tirofiban or Abciximab [FATA] trial) of the equivalence of HDB tirofiban vs abciximab during PPCI in terms of ST-segment resolution (STR)
- Subjects: 692 pts with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing PPCI
- Randomization 1:1 to receive abciximab (341 pts) or HDB tirofiban (351)
- Primary endpoint: rate of complete (≥70%) STR 90 min after first balloon inflation
- Evaluation of 30-day incidence of major bleedings, death, re-infarction and new revascularizations
- Baseline characteristics of both groups well-balanced, except previous MI rates: tirofiban 6% vs abciximab 2.6%
- Procedure successful in 96.7% of abciximab and 96.6% of tirofiban pts
- Complete STR in 67.05% of tirofiban and 70.45% of abciximab group
- Rates of secondary endpoints similar between groups
