Increased frequency of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia and associated factors: A comparative study
Journal of Rheumatology, 08/13/09
Pamuk ON et al. – Study reports that in patients with fibromyalgia (FM), the severity scores of dyspepsia symptoms, constipation, and dyspepsia-related quality of life (QOL) disturbance were higher than in patients with rheumaotid arthritis (RA) and controls. The higher gastrointestinal (GI) symptom severity in pts with FM might have negative effects on their QOL.
Methods- Aim was to determine the frequency and severity of GI symptoms in pts with FM
- Study participants:
- 152 women with FM (mean age 45.4 ± 12.2 yrs)
- 98 women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA; mean age 45.5 ± 12.3 yrs), and
- 60 healthy female controls (mean age 44 ± 11.3 yrs)
- All pts were questioned about the severity of their:
- Chronic widespread pain
- Symptoms of FM
- Symptoms of dyspepsia, using a VAS and anxiety-depression scale
- Pts were asked self-reported:
- Symptom-based constipation and severity of constipation questions, and
- About the severity of QOL disturbance secondary to dyspepsia and constipation
- Pts with FM had higher symptom severities for belching, reflux, bloating, sour taste, and vomiting vs pts with RA and controls
- Pts with FM had more dyspepsia-related QOL disturbances vs other 2 groups
- FM and RA pts had more frequent self-reported constipation than controls
- Frequency of symptom-based constipation was higher in RA group vs FM and control groups
- Constipation-related QOL disturbance was higher in pts with FM than in controls
