Burbridge P et al. - Although many AEDs may be efficacious in older patients, evidence from large-scale RCTs is limited. There is general consensus that newer AEDs may have advantages over older agents, especially with regard to their better side-effect profile and fewer interactions. They are fast becoming first choice in treating older people. When prescribing AEDs for older patients, a ‘start low, go slow’ approach may help avoid adverse drug effects.
