Kalayb, Nihat MD., et al. – Does carbon dioxide poisoning have long term effects on the heart?
>Summary: Prospective study of 20 patients diagnosed with CO poisoning Patients were evaluated with echocardiographic examinations on admission, at 24 hours, and within the first week and B-type natriuretic peptide and carboxyhemoglobin levels were measured.
Outcomes: Patients with higher carboxyhemoglobin levels and longer exposure to CO had high cardic markers. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was <45% in 8 patients on admission but increased to >55% in 7 patients after 24 hours. Myocardial dysfunction does occur with CO poisoning, particulary LV systolic function but most of it resolves after 24 hours
